server crash

well that wasn’t fun … something bad happened on the first ide channel of my main file server, intrepid, and when i finally managed to boot it off a rescue floppy, i found a bad state of affairs … on the two disks on that channel, i have /, /home, /usr and /var … the superblocks and god knows what else were triply corrupt (according to fsck!) and it was just a complete mess. I’m still recovering data from /home and /var, /usr i discarded almost immediately, i’ll look at / later – i pulled the most immediate things from there which were my exim.conf and apache conf files. i threw in a spare 4 gig ide drive and reinstalled debian woody. most things are working now, most critically apache and samba (ish), i’ll concentrate on everything else when i have time.

on a lighter note, i managed to get a 128 meg so-dimm for the vaio for about 25 quid, so i’ve bunged that in to bump it up to 192 meg – i think i’ll chuck the old 64 meg so-dimm that was in it previously onto ebay.

i’ve been having fun writing the back end to the new smoothwall store, letting the staff go into the orders placed and process them for shipping post-payment, and also to clear any logjams in payment processing. i’m quite chuffed with it – shame you can’t see it :)
