Slashdot: "NASA Probe Launched!" ... Erm, Seven Years Ago
neuro comment 0 Comments

Further proof that the once-mighty slashdot.org is becoming, um, how do I say this tactfully — poo?

CowboyNeal let through a story submission entitled “NASA Sending Probe to Saturn”, which discusses the joint NASA/ESA/ISA (Italian Space Agency) Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn, and specifically Titan. It all sounds great, but the problem is that Cassini-Huygens was launched in October 1997, and won’t be inserted into the orbit of Saturn until July 2004 (you can find out where it is right now) — hardly breaking news, and a somewhat misleading title — “NASA Still Sending Probe” may have been more accurate :)

When something’s moving at 24,923 km/h, but has travelled 3.2 billion kilometres since launch, things move somewhat slowly. A news item closer to the time would have been more prudent … *sigh* … Slashdot, once you were übercool, now you’re just another briefly interesting news source.
