“We Here Highly Resolve That These Dead Shall Not Have Died In Vain”

It’s now after 8:46am Eastern Daylight Time on September 11th, 2002. It’s one year since New York’s world was turned upside down, America’s world, our world. I was flicking between the news channels before 8:46 EDT just to see who’s coverage seemed most appropriate to watch. I settled on CNN’s. The beginning of what will undoubtedly be a long, tiring and for some traumatic day is underway, with a dedication and remembrance ceremony at ‘Ground Zero’ on the site of the WTC, and a ceremony at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. Hearing the list of 2,801 names of those who died that day is both humbling and horrifying. To hear one name read out, followed by “Junior and Senior” … two generations of a family’s men, gone in an instant … we (the SmoothWall staff) were chatting about the coverage on IRC, and when we heard that, we realised how hard that country has been hurt.

I wanted to express some of my sentiments, and Richard from SmoothWall agreed, so I put up an article on the site detailing how I found out, and what we as a team went through that week.

The title of this blog entry comes from the Gettysburg Address, as read at today’s NY ceremony by New York Governor George Pataki. As he read it, I thought the words seemed apt.
