Richard’s been commenting on our mutual appreciationobsession of Monsieur Kevin Smith‘s fine motion picture works. Nooch.
So how did that come about? To be honest, I’ve no idea … I remember seeing Clerks in Virgin Megastore years ago, and thinking “ooh, this looks good”. Upon watching it, my initial reaction was totally vindicated. I loved it. It was irreverent, sarcastic, extremely funny, and made intelligent use of swearwords. I soon found out that Mallrats was also available. That was summarily purchased, and I laughed even harder at that than I did at Clerks — I think mainly because the characters seemed somewhat more fleshed out than in Clerks. Also, any film which can get away with the line “Fly, fatass, fly!” while the director filmed is swinging across a mall should deserve some serious brownie points.
After a while, Chasing Amy became available, and while definitely being somewhat more mature than Clerks or ‘Rats, it definitely lacked some of the raw humour that was infused within the first two. Dogma was played even straighter than Amy, despite the potentially blasphemous subject matter — which, incidentally, as a lapsed Catholic of some years now, I found absolutely bloody hilarious :) I’ve yet to get a copy of Dogma, maily because it’s been on Sky Premier about two dozen times in the last couple of months, and there’s therefore been no pressing need.
And that brings us up to Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, which to be honest, I’ve still to watch all the way through. So I’ll reserve judgement until I get my signed copy from the stash!
So why do I find Kevin Smith movies funny? I genuinely don’t know. They just strike a chord with me, and I find them seriously bloody funny to boot. Clerks, Mallrats and Dogma, while not making it to my Top Five Movies of All Time (thank you High Fidelity, which is up there), they are probably my most favourite comedies of all time.
Incidentally, my Top Five Movies of All Time are Heat, It’s A Wonderful Life, High Fidelity, Fight Club, and Grosse Point Blank, with Star Wars, Ronin, The Matrix and Star Trek The Motion Picture knocking about nearby :)
In a wholly unrelated note, I appear to have wireless ethernet half working, given that I’m sitting here typing away into blogger.com from the lounge without a single cable running into the vaio. The only downside at the moment is that I have no routing outside my main subnet. so I can’t directly access the outside world or my local mail server without some proxying assistance. I’ll sort that out tomorrow with luck. Very cute though — I definitely want to get this working, as I’d love to be able to work for a while from bed or from the couch. It’s definitely much more comfortable than sitting in the study all day.
